Google launched the tool in November 2021, soon after acquiring Urchin, a data mining company that specialized in finding new ways to gather market related data.

Currently, Google Analytics provides a customized experience for business owners by displaying customized charts and graphs, customizable user defined views, and more. The ability to drill down and investigate for custom elements such as URL’s and domain names gives Google Analytics an unparalleled opportunity to show you which of the many elements on a website are creating the most unique visitors. A common question from new website owners and designers alike is what is a metric in Google Analytics?

As mentioned above, Google Analytics provides a customized experience for business owners by displaying a customized graph and dashboard. For example, a traditional measurement of metrics would be “the number of unique visitors to a site”. But, we now have the question of what is a metric in Google Analytics? The answer is when a visitor enters your site, that person has entered their information into Google Analytics and you have determined the primary dimensions that create the unique visitors to your site.

Let’s take our example further. Suppose that we measured the cost of each page in our site, then we would know the overall cost of our product line, but we would not know whether or not those customers went on to purchase anything. This can be addressed by assigning a metric to each page such as the cost per page or cost-per-impression. Both of these metrics would be included in the custom dimensions of Google Analytics.

It is also important to note that the dimension does not need to be a number. Both of these are considered to be metrics that are considered to be custom dimensions.
