Evangelical Texas pastor Tony Evans steps down from church due to unnamed ‘sin’

Dr. Tony Evans, a prominent evangelical pastor based in Texas, has announced his resignation from leadership at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, citing a “sin” that he acknowledged in a statement posted on the church’s website Sunday.

“The foundation of our ministry has always been our unwavering commitment to the Word of God as the ultimate standard of truth by which we are to guide our lives,” Evans expressed in his statement. “Regrettably, I fell short of that standard due to sin. Therefore, I am compelled to hold myself to the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration that I have preached to others.”

Evans clarified that while he has not committed a crime, he admitted to exercising poor judgment in his actions.

The decision for Evans to step down followed extensive prayer and multiple meetings involving Evans, church elders, and Pastor Bobby Gibson. Additional details about interim leadership and future plans will be communicated in the coming days, according to the church.

Tony Evans, who established Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in 1976 with just ten members in his home, has overseen its growth to over 10,000 members. He is widely recognized for his radio program, “The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans,” broadcast on more than 1,000 stations globally. Previously, he served as chaplain for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks.

Evans was married to Lois Evans until her passing in 2019, with whom he had four children: Chrystal Hurst, Priscilla Shirer, Anthony Jr. Evans, and Jonathan Evans. He remarried Carla Evans (formerly Carla Crummie) in November 2023.
