How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage
For some U.S. travelers, the prospect of a long-haul flight to Australia can be daunting. However, Holland America Line has introduced an enticing alternative with its Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage, departing round-trip from San Diego, California, in 2026. This epic 93-day journey offers a leisurely and scenic route to the land down under and back.
“Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world’s most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States,” said Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, in a news release. “We crafted this itinerary to feature both the iconic destinations of Australia and New Zealand, as well as lesser-known, frequently requested ports in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.”
When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage? The voyage will set sail on January 4, 2026, aboard the Zaandam, which accommodates 1,432 guests.
Where will the cruise sail? The Zaandam will visit 44 ports across 10 countries. The journey begins with a stop in Hawaii before heading to the South Pacific. The cruise will then nearly circumnavigate Australia and explore New Zealand, before stopping in Tonga and French Polynesia on the return trip to San Diego.
Highlights of the itinerary include two days of scenic cruising along the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia, and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea, and Huahine. Additionally, guests will enjoy overnight stays in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney, and Auckland, allowing ample time for exploration.
How much does the cruise cost? The starting price for the cruise is $17,699 per person, based on double occupancy, as listed on Holland America’s website. Travelers who book by June 16, 2025, can take advantage of perks such as a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount, and more, depending on the stateroom category.
