‘Extreme’ protest groups face ban under proposal

The government’s adviser on political violence, Lord Walney, is proposing to categorize protest groups like Just Stop Oil and Palestine Action as potential threats akin to terrorist organizations. A forthcoming report seen by BBC News suggests introducing measures to proscribe “extreme protest groups” known for employing criminal tactics to advance their agendas.

Under this proposal, such groups could face restrictions on fundraising and assembly rights in the UK. Lord Walney argues that banning these groups, similar to how terrorist organizations are handled, would impede their ability to plan and execute disruptive activities.

Just Stop Oil criticized the government, accusing them of endangering the public through climate policies, while Palestine Action defended its actions as aligning with public sentiment regarding UK-Israel relations. Despite the potential restrictions, these groups remain undeterred in their campaigns.

The report emphasizes that the proposed restriction orders would be distinct from terrorism-related proscription but could curtail organizations consistently resorting to criminal actions or causing significant disruption for political purposes.

The recommendations are part of a broader review into addressing political violence by Lord Walney, commissioned three years ago but yet to be published. Government sources indicate that ministers are receptive to Lord Walney’s goals and will consider implementing his suggestions upon publication of the review.

A Home Office spokesperson reiterated the government’s stance against extremism and affirmed support for law enforcement efforts to combat violent and hateful behavior among protesters. They also assured careful consideration of the report’s recommendations and pledged a timely response.
