Charles Barkley says he will retire from television after 2024-25 NBA season

The future of “Inside the NBA” beyond the upcoming season remains uncertain as Warner Bros. Discovery competes for a role in the NBA’s next media rights agreement.

Charles Barkley, a prominent member of the show known for his candid commentary, announced after Game 4 of the NBA Finals that he will be departing after next season, regardless of the show’s future beyond that point. He further stated that he plans to retire from NBA television altogether after the 2024-25 season.

Expressing gratitude towards TNT and his colleagues during NBA TV’s postgame coverage following the Mavericks’ victory over the 76ers, Barkley emphasized his appreciation for his NBA family after 24 years with TNT.

Acknowledging ongoing discussions with other networks about his post-2025 future in NBA media, Barkley clarified that despite the talks, his loyalty remains with TNT. He declared that the upcoming season would mark his final year on television, intending to pass the torch to the next generation of analysts like Vince Carter and Jamal Crawford.

Barkley recently criticized WBD CEO David Zaslav over his remarks concerning the company’s NBA relationship. Earlier on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Barkley had expressed discontent about the uncertain atmosphere within “Inside the NBA,” attributing it to the negotiation turmoil.

Addressing speculation about his potential departure if Turner Sports lost NBA rights, Barkley firmly stated that he has no plans to join another network.

In response to Barkley’s announcement, TNT Sports praised him as a broadcasting icon and confirmed ongoing discussions about their future plans together.

Barkley, a Hall of Famer who joined “Inside the NBA” in 2000 after his illustrious playing career, shares the screen with Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith on the show. His final sign-off reiterated his appreciation and his decision to retire after 25 years in the field.
