Ryan Phillippe gives shout-out to ex-wife Reese Witherspoon in throwback photo: ‘We were hot’

Ryan Phillippe took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about the past and his fashion chemistry with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon.

Sharing a nostalgic throwback on his Instagram Stories, Phillippe posted a playful photo of himself and Witherspoon standing side by side in stylish, striped outfits. In the snapshot, Phillippe rocked a sleeveless, collared shirt with blue and white stripes, while Witherspoon opted for a chic black-and-white halter dress.

“We were hot and drenched in late ’90s angst @reesewitherspoon,” Phillippe captioned the post. “Such a cooler time than today.”

Although Witherspoon was tagged in the post, she has yet to respond to Phillippe’s nostalgic throwback.

Phillippe and Witherspoon shared the screen in the 1999 romantic drama “Cruel Intentions” alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair. The former couple, who were married from 1999 to 2007, are parents to two children: Ava Elizabeth, 24, and Deacon Reese, 20.

Following their split, Witherspoon tied the knot with talent agent Jim Toth in 2011. Together, they have an 11-year-old son named Tennessee James. In contrast, Phillippe shares a 12-year-old daughter named Kai with his ex-girlfriend Alexis Knapp.

The former couple made headlines at the 2002 Academy Awards when they presented the award for best makeup. During the segment, Witherspoon asked Phillippe if she could announce the winner, to which he jokingly replied, “You make more than I do. Go ahead.”

Reflecting on the incident during a December 2020 podcast appearance, Witherspoon admitted that she had forgotten about the moment and revealed that Phillippe’s comment wasn’t scripted. She acknowledged that while gender norms have evolved over the past two decades, women in Hollywood who earn “a lot of money” are still sometimes “shamed” for their success.
