Mackinac Island in Michigan named No. 1 ‘Best Summer Travel Destination’

A new list has crowned Mackinac Island, located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsula, as the top summer travel destination for 2024. USA Today’s “10Best” Readers’ Choice awards selected Mackinac Island as the No. 1 destination, highlighting its allure as a car-free haven where visitors can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, watch fudge-making demonstrations, and explore historic sites like Fort Mackinac. The island’s natural beauty, including landmarks like Arch Rock, and recreational opportunities in Mackinac Island State Park, such as hiking, biking, and kayaking, further contribute to its appeal.

Mackinac Island’s recognition as the top summer destination for the second consecutive year underscores its enduring charm and popularity among travelers. Mayor Margaret Doud expressed gratitude to the island community and visitors who voted for Mackinac Island, emphasizing its status as a cherished destination.

Additionally, Door County in Wisconsin secured a spot on the summer travel list, ranking seventh. Known for its scenic shoreline along Lake Michigan and a plethora of water-based activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing, Door County offers a quintessential Midwestern getaway for outdoor enthusiasts and water lovers alike.
