Fake MSI websites offer afterburner applications with possible malware
When access to popular resources suddenly disappear, people tend to look for alternative sources, where they come from. It applies to websites but even more for software and applications that can bring some unprofitable consequences. That might happen with the popular MSI afterburner tool which suddenly becomes unavailable without many warnings and, at least briefly, imitated by almost convincing fraud websites that can cause users unwittingly to download some malware.
The MSI afterburner tool is quite popular among PC and gaming fans who want to squeeze the most of their rigs. It offers system monitoring and GPU overclocking tools that do not distinguish between Nvidia and AMD rivals. Given its popularity, it’s really not surprising that people go find an alternative download source when the official server Msi suddenly stops working.
Unfortunately, one source like that not only tried to offer a copy of MSI afterburner, it also tried to disguise it as MSI itself. Like an effort designed to hide the true identity of the owner, every download that comes from this fake MSI website must be held by the suspect. That’s exactly the MSI warning, but, it might have been too little to cancel some damage.
The real problem is that MSI itself only uses the announcement to warn the user about this situation. Meanwhile, the official page for afterburner does not have any wares and still has a download button that does not work. Without a clear explanation or alternative, users will naturally try to find other sources.
Fortunately, it seems that the fraud website has been taken from the commission. MSI also said that afterburner would be downloaded again after routine maintenance. Unfortunately, it doesn’t also offer an alternative download link that can save time and people’s problems from the start.
